Facing a fear

I do not like heights. When I saw the funicular tracks up to the castle, I had a flashback to the terror of the scenic railway in Katoomba: hyperventilation, shaky knees, and a desire never to inflict such torture on myself again. However if I wanted to get up to the castle and have leg power left to prowl around, I needed to face my fear. Then I saw the lift descend. Everyone was on the horizontal. It wasn't after all like a crazy funfair ride.

However, the funicular wasn't the only height challenge. If I wanted to go up the viewing tower, I had to brave a spiral staircase. Fortunately it was sturdy, I could grip both sides, the embossed stairs were wide, and I was under no obligation to look down. The view from the top was worth the slight squeamishness. You could see how Ljubljana sits in its basin of mountains, and also how small it is – only 300 000 people, and plenty of green.

It was cold and I was hungry. So I turned my back on the museum after a cursory glance at the first axled wheel and an early bone flute, and found a friendly restaurant where I had a rich vegetable soup and a chat with a friendly waitress.
