I must pay my brief respects to Antonio Tomaž Linhart, born in Radovljica in 1756 when German was the dominant language. He was the first to write in Slovene. As well a writing dramas in the vernacular, he also penned a history of Slovenes as a unit, rather than province by province; he translated “The book on cattle-plague and diseases of cattle, sheep and pigs” for farmers; and as a school commissioner for Ljubljana he established 27 elementary schools in four years.
