Vintgar Gorge
Here is the pick of my Slovenian photos for friends who don’t read blogs and yet want to know where I’ve been and what I’ve seen.
As I walked along the boardwalks through Vintgar Gorge, I realised that I'm a fickle worshipper. I now have a new deity: the Rodnava River, as it roars and rushes along, settles into more sedate rapids and occasionally resolves into almost still water, before it drops over the edge in rainbows and clouds of vapoury mist. I was drawn by its power and its absolute clarity. In the rare still patches, you could see the cliff extending under water, or deep down to a submerged tree or shaly pebbles.
Flowers grew on the cliff-face and on the rocks midstream, or hung over the edge below the boardwalk, often in defiance of the hurtling race of the river. At one place of calmness a duck swam about, and then took off, flying low up the gorge following the twists and turns of the river, until it disappeared. The air was a strange mix of simultaneous warm and chill.
The boardwalk criss-crossed the gorge, offering perfect views up and down stream. I met a photography widow, who wandered aimlessly up and down as her companion set up his tripod, chose a lens, shifted perspective and finally pressed the button. His was true obeisance.
Any flower ID would be very welcome. My Southern Hemisphere bits of knowledge are no help at all.
