The many pleasures of Slovenia

I can't leave Slovenia without a thank you for all its pleasures.

Soup: The secret I think is a rich stock. I had vegetable soup that had a hambone base and was full of vegetables, with a tang of heat; and a fish soup full of chunky fish pieces that the waitress assured me didn't include bones.

Scenery: My photos have said it all. Lakes, castles, rushing rivers, waterfalls, churches, old town squares, beehive panels, pletnas, swan boats, flowers, and, of course, alps – everywhere I turned, a different kind of beauty.

Friendliness: Above all! Everyone I encountered was overwhelmingly, and somehow personally, friendly – my hosts, waitresses, taxi drivers, museum guardians, bus drivers, tour guides. Three people made taxi phone calls for me, when I was fumbling around trying to figure out which numbers to dial: the woman in the Information office, a young man wearing dark shades in a youth hostel bus, and the cashier at the entrance to Bled Castle.

Thank you, Slovenia, for a wonderful stay.
